If we take popular sentiment on Twitter, then Chhichhore is arguably the best film of 2019. Almost everyone who has seen the Nitesh Tiwari film has been lavishing praise on the lovingly recreated nostalgia, comic punches, bonhomie and the message of dealing with failures. The entire ensemble cast has won over the audience and critics but today let us take a look at Chhichhore's Anni played by Sushant Singh Rajput. The MS Dhoni actor was coming into the film after the huge debacle of the much-acclaimed Son Chiriya. Chhichhore hardly had any hype around it and some self-appointed trade experts were quick to proclaim that it looked like a disaster. The reality is far from that. Love is pouring in for all the actors including the Kedarnath star both on social media and at the ticket windows. Sushant Singh Rajput has not given any success interviews so far leaving people wondering why is he so indifferent. Had it been any other actor we would have seen interviews splashed all over print and digital media. It is just one of the things that seem to set him apart from the most; he keeps low-key even if it means losing out the media coverage that could be critical for 'brand-building' in a hugely competitive industry. Like it or criticize him, one thing is certain, Sushant is certainly a lot different from his peers. Here is a look...
Versatile filmography
The young actor made a successful transition from TV to films with Kai Po Che! (2013) and Shuddh Desi Romance (2013). It was followed by a cameo in PK, a blockbuster. He took a risk quite early with Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015). It was a retro mystery and there was always an uncertainty about it clicking at the box office. In eight years, he has worked in around 10 films (released and unreleased) and all of them vastly different from the other. He could have played it safer but then he staunchly believes that there is no successful formula in the world of films.
Process matters
Sushant was roped in for two projects that could have turned out to be landmark ones, Shekhar Kapur's Paani and Chanda Mama Door Ke. One was a futuristic film on water scarcity while the other was a space adventure. Those asociated with the project spoke about how emotionally invested he was in them. Sadly, they did not take off and he lost out on some films. While some actors would have taken it negatively, he said he took happiness in the learning process. In an emotional note, he told Shekhar Kapur, "I will be ever obliged to you sir for things I have learned or rather 'unlearned' because of you. Respect." The mantra has remained the same over the years despite failures or successes.
Where is the PR?
According to his fans, this is the most distinctive quality about him, Sushant Singh Rajput has no PR. The actor spends his time away from his Bandra residence at his Lonavala residence star-gazing and doing other stuff. We don't see stories on his airport-spotting, night-outs, wardrobes, etc, etc. The only time he is seen is during his film promotions. Some might argue that there is no need considering that he is always in the news for his rumoured personal life, the fact is that he's never made news by giving endless clarifications or passing 'fun' statements on the rumours. He speaks very rarely on it.
Social media
This is where he is delightfully different and people adore him for that. The Kai Po Che! has often said that he has a life beyond films and that reflects on his social media. His passion for space studies is obvious, he has a love for the arts and takes time out to interact with his fans. This is perhaps, the only thing he does that is close to PR! The actor has been working on some social projects but not much is known about them.
Fresh pairings
Unlike most of his contemporaries, Sushant Singh Rajput has never worked with the same actress twice. We don't know if it is deliberate or he just did not have the chance to do so. In ten films, he has worked with around 15 different heroines. That is quite a record!
Secure in his space
The actor has never spoken about how films mean everything to him and so on. He was secure and confident enough to do a Chhichhore where he knew he could be overshadowed easily.
The actor now has Dil Bechara coming on November 29, 2019. It is directed by his mentor and good friend Mukesh Chhabra. The film marks the debut of Sanjana Sanghi. And at last, we have news on Drive that the film is finally coming on Netflix. Jacqueline Fernandez is his leading lady. Stay tuned to BL for more scoops!
