Just a couple of weeks ago, Anubhav Sinha had announced his second collaboration with Taapsee Pannu. The filmmaker had dropped a hint of his next project to his then leading lady of Mulk. Anubhav Sinha sat down with Mumbai Mirror for a chat and revealed that they had halfway through the shoot. He and the company are planning to wrap up by mid-October. Thappad is set in Delhi and is shot extensively in Lucknow, the director informed the daily.
The Tum Bin helmer informed that he had an idea which dealt with the aspect of the man-woman relationship. The idea had long since been on his mind but he never had a proper idea how to go about it. "It was while discussing it with Taapsee that I was convinced that the story had enough meat to be pursued further," he explains. Taapsee revealed that when she heard the script she was instantly interested. Both the actor-filmmaker duo felt strongly about the content.
When Taapsee Pannu encouraged the directed, he decided to work around the script with Mrunmayee Lagoo. The story narrates the tale of eight characters and their lives. How their lives intersect and why forms the crux of the story.
Taapsee further revealed that the women in the film would not only be from diverse backgrounds but also from different age groups. "It's a woman's perspective on relationships, what they want, with a common thread linking them." While one of the stories would be fronted by Taapsee the rest of the star cast includes Dia Mirza, Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Geetika Vidya, Maya Sarao, Naila Grewal and Gracy Goswami. That's not all, there are a few other supporting characters as well. The filmmaker recalls the day when there were 15 actors on the sets while filming.
A source close to the development told Mumbai Mirror, that the subject deals with violence in relationships but not in a gruesome way. It touches on aspects that are taken for granted in a man-woman relationship. "It's a tragedy that we label women. We conveniently put them on a pedestal, then, use them. My film is not pro-feminists, it is about women. Period." The director confirms.
Anubhav Sinha revealed that he found inspiration for his stories in the stories of his mother, sister, cousins and friends. The director promises to change the perspective of people with this film.
Since he is giving a voice to women on the country, the director was quizzed about his take on the #MeToo movement that took the industry by a storm last year. "I think #MeToo almost became a movement but didn't reach its logical conclusion. I don't think it helped the women who should have benefitted from it," he signs off.
